M.T.H. "superstarkes" Rauchöl

Sie hatte mehr Treibräder als irgend eine andere Dampflok. Sie war zu groß geraten für die Lokschuppen und Werkstätten ihrer Eigentümer. Fast unglaublich: Sie konnte einen Zug ziehen, der 5 Meilen lang war (das sind mehr als 8 Kilometer). Und erst viele Jahre nach ihrer Ausmusterung wurde eine Technik für Mehrfachtraktionen erfunden, die es einem einzigen Lokführer ermöglichte, mehrere Dampflokomotiven von einem Führerstand aus zu fahren und damit soviel Kraft auf die Schiene zu bringen wie Jahrzehnte zuvor schon ein einziger Triplex-Lokführer!

Leider war ihrem Einsatz kein dauerhafter Erfolg beschieden. Baldwin hatte zwischen 1914 und 1916 im Auftrag der "Erie" drei "Triplex" gebaut für den Nachschiebedienst hinauf in die Susquehanna-Berge im Staat New York. Eine Triplex hat mehr als zehn Jahre lang jeweils drei normale Nachschub-Lokomotiven ersetzt. Aber trotz dieses Erfolgs bestellte nur eine Gesellschaft, die "Virginian Railway", ebenfalls eine Triplex - eine einzige. Der Grund für die Zurückhaltung der BAhngesellschaften, neben einigen anderen technischen Widrigkeiten: Der Dampf aus dem riesigen Kessel reichte nur für eine Geschwindigkeit von 10 mph, und das dritte Triebwerk unter dem Tender verlor an Zugkraft, je leichter der Tender durch den Kohle- und Wasserverbrauch während der Fahrt  wurde . . .  Da es solche Widrigkeiten dank ausgefeilter Technik und Elektronik im Maßstab 1:87  nicht gibt,  fährt das Modell kurioserweise schneller, besser und ausdauernder als das Vorbild!
